What a difference a day makes

Today, I woke up to a tiny human voice telling me, “It’s time to get up, Mommy!” Today, I drank hot chocolate and listened to country music on blast while cruising down Capital. Today, I went to Crossfit, my home away from home, and pushed my body as hard as I could, PR’ing my hang cleans AND my deadlifts. I can now hang clean 105 pounds and deadlift 185 pounds. Today, I went to Panera for HOURS and edited my novel and a short story from my workshops in Vienna. Today, I felt alive…

Describe yourself, he says.

The he is Jake Lamar. He asks us to use first, second, or third person POV and to describe ourselves. I am sitting in an AC-less room in Vienna talking about writing with my fellow MFA classmates. This trip is the first time I’ve met a lot of these people, and the first time I’ve met Jake. When we go around the room reading our exercises, I wait until the last second to volunteer. I am not one to speak up when I’m nervous. And I am nervous. Before I even start to…

My, oh my, how long it’s been!

Wow! I can’t believe it’s been two months since I’ve updated my blog! Things have been so very hectic in my personal life (going through a divorce with a kid can definitely take up a lot of space in your mind!) so I’ve been neglecting my writing a little. I did end up finishing Camp NaNoWriMo in July. I’m still working on editing the first draft of my NA novel since I kind of put it on hold to do other things. But I plan to get back to it…

Dear Prudence & Camp NaNoWriMo

Hey everyone! Quick update! I’m less than 10,000 words from finishing my Camp NaNoWriMo goal. Once I finish, I’ll post a more detailed post explaining all that went right (and wrong) with Camp. Let’s just say, it was not easy and I had to make my goal less words. But I’m determined to finish these last 10,000 by the end of the day on Wednesday! As for my short story “Dear Prudence”, it was just published on FICTION on the WEB on July 18th. I’ve gotten…

Camp NaNoWriMo & Query/Submission Progress Update :)

Hey there, fine folks!  Here’s a quick update on my querying with my YA novel: Well, I’ve heard back from three agents who had fulls and one who had the first ten pages (partial req). One passed on full. Although, I don’t believe she actually read it since it was so fast and form-ish. She didn’t have pages to begin with so I bet she only started it. The partial req also passed. HOWEVER, I did get a revise & resubmit from one agent who said she didn’t believe…

TAKE THAT, NOVEL!

I just hacked off about 6000 words of my NA novel. I kinda want to jump off a cliff. I was more than 1/4 done. I was over 25,000 words.  And now, I’m under 20,000.  I want to cry. But I did what I needed to do to fix a major plot problem. I got back on track. I’m headed in the right direction. Am I the first person who has to LOWER their words written for the day at Camp NaNoWriMo? 🙁 I doubt it. Well, I hope at least.  So. Depressed.   SIGH…

“Writing a book…

“Writing a book is a horrible, exhausting struggle, like a long bout of some painful illness. One would never undertake such a thing if one were not driven on by some demon whom one can neither resist nor understand.” —George Orwell…

Camp NaNoWriMo!

I’m SO excited for Camp NaNoWriMo tomorrow! Anyone else participating?? My goal for July is 95,000 words (I’m including what I’ve already written for this novel so technically it’ll be less than that). I’m sure it’s going to be hard to actually write that many words but I’m hoping it’ll happen! I’m ready for camp…

Why writing a book makes you a BADASS!

Queries, Queries, Queries!

So, I’ve found this incredible website called querytracker.net and the inner list maker in me has gone COMPLETELY CRAZY. If you could see the lists I’m making for agents to query, you’d probably slap me. I am OBSESSED with this website. It’s so great for researching lit agents and seeing statistics and comments from others who have submitted. I’m in LOVE. I even paid the $25 for the year of premium membership… be still, my heart!   Anyhoooo… speaking of queries, I’ve sent out a bunch…
